With boundless ways to become a member of these organizations, living off campus can help students become more connected. Students are sometimes hesitant to move out of the dorms because they don’t want to lose the benefit of having all their friends one door away. Though, when you move off campus at JMU, that doesn’t necessarily happen.
Here are a few important things to know about JMU. If you’re interested in business, many business classes are hosted in Zane Showker Hall, which is located in Lakeside. If you’re an athlete, you may be spending a lot of time in Godwin, which is directly across from the Lakeside dorms.
It has become Virginia’s second most photographed location on social media sites like Instagram and Twitter, after Kings Dominion. So, students that are a little lost, JMU will make you into something more than you could have expected. I am an out of state student, so it is more expensive. However, it is still not insane, and totally worth it. My only criticize is that they do not give out much financial aid.

They have office hours, are so accommodating to your schedules, and are genuinely great people. Of course there are exceptions, but they are far and few in between. I cannot even put into words how huge of a change JMU has had on me as a person.
In regards to this, Residence Life is usually very good at assigning roommates. Personally, my roommate is my best friend so it worked out very well for us. Urec is an amazing facility that is located on the east side of campus. It contains excellent free weights and weight machines. In addition, there is a hot tub, pool, and sauna. There are also opportunities to sign up for group fitness classes that are fun.
It was named the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts in honor of Bruce and Lois Forbes, who gave $5 million to the project. The wing of The Forbes Center dedicated to theater and dance is named the Dorothy Thomasson Estes Center for Theatre and Dance in honor of a $2.5 million gift by the husband of Dorothy Estes. The wing dedicated to music is named the Shirley Hanson Roberts Center for Music Performance in honor of a multi-million dollar gift from the husband of Shirley Roberts.
And in 2010, the food at JMU was ranked third in the United States. In 2011 the student body was ranked 20th “happiest in the entire nation” by Newsweek and The Daily Beast. These rankings take into consideration the surrounding area’s activities, academics, as well as the social scene on campus. The university has also experienced tension with local residents with occasional clashes between local police and students at a popular off-campus block party. In 2000, a party with about 2,500 students grew out of hand and required a police presence at the Forest Hills townhouse complex on Village Lane. Ten years later, police equipped with riot gear used force to disperse a group of 8,000 college-aged people at the party.
